Time to Dash off for Durrell

Hundreds of runners across the Island are limbering up to dash around the countryside next month and raise money for some of Jersey’s endangered residents.

Serious athletes and those looking for more of a fun run will be racing through the lanes of Trinity and St Martin on Sunday 19th October in the Durrell Dash.

With two courses to choose from – the 13k or the 6k - athletes of all ages and abilities are encouraged to take part in the race that has become an integral part of the Island’s sporting calendar.

Records were beaten last year when around 450 runners helped raise over £8,000 to help Durrell save species from extinction and the organisers hope to do even better this year.

The race begins and ends in the grounds of the Wildlife Park and this year is sponsored by the Alex Picot Group and Rathbones.

Discussing the sponsorship Don Connolly, Partner at Alex Picot Group said, “The Alex Picot Group is proud to continue its association with the Durrell Dash for the fourth consecutive year.  We feel privileged to support an event that has quickly established itself both as part of the island’s sporting calendar and as a fantastic community event.  Being a local firm, we are delighted to provide sponsorship to one of the Islands premier charities, which carries out important work globally. As in previous years we will have a strong representation from the firm in the two races and are looking forward to what is sure to be a great day.”

Sarah Nibbs, Events Manager at Durrell said: “The Durrell Dash is increasingly popular both with local runners and visitors to the Island and the money generated by this event is vital in assisting us in our mission of saving species from extinction. We’d really like to beat last year’s total and are hoping over 500  runners will sign up to take part and help us reach our goal this year of £10,000.”

“We are grateful to Alex Picot Group for their continued support and we are also delighted to welcome Rathbones as an additional sponsor this year; we'd also like to thank Jersey Triathlon Club who have assisted in marking and measuring the routes.”

The pre-race stretch and warm up for the 13 kilometre Dash starts at 8.15 am before all the runners set off at 8.30 am. The 6 kilometre Dash warm up will be at 8.45 am and the starting gun will sound at 9.00 am.  Runners of the 6km route must be 13 years or over, and 13km runners must be aged 16 years or over.

Awards will be given for the top three in each Dash, as well as to the best dressed runners. All those taking part will get to take home a specially designed t-shirt.

The entry fee is £15 for adults and £10 for juniors (under 18 years of age) who register in advance. Online registration is available until 12th October. Late registration is available from 7.15 am on the day at £20.00 for adults, or £15.00 for junior runners.
