The orangutan population in Sumatra is spiraling towards the unthinkable - the loss of this species forever. As you can see from our recent documentary (click here), with your kind help, we can make sure that Dana’s baby and her cousins in the wild have a future... please consider adopting baby Kea, and in turn we will spare no effort in keeping our friends from the forest from disappearing forever.

Meet Ricko, a veterinarian graduate of Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. He has assisted us on numerous occasions in the operations of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), which involves veterinary care of confiscated ex-pet orangutans, capture and relocation of wild orangutans, and reintroduction of orangutans back to a life in the wild.
Ricko wants to expand his skill set so he can continue saving orangutans from being lost forever.
Please donate, and we will place Ricko on a intensive 12 week course to learn these vital skills.
"I promoted Ricko's attendance on desman as he's a dedicated conservationist, a good guy with a bright future."
Ian Singleton, Ph.D, Director of Conservation, SOCP
"I have known Ricko for a number of years now. He is a veterinarian graduate of Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Ricko has assisted us on numerous occasions in the operations of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), which involves veterinary care of confiscated ex-pet orangutans, capture and relocation of wild orangutans, and reintroduction of orangutans back to a life in the wild.
We were also fortunate to be able to facilitate Ricko to attend a month long training course in 2010 arranged with the Veterinary faculty of the University of Zurich and Zurich Zoo. In early 2012 he also worked as a veterinarian at the Siantar Zoo in North Sumatra, eventually leaving for ethical reasons as he felt uncomfortable with some of the zoos activities.
At the time of writing Ricko is employed by a partner organization of ours here, namely the Orangutan Information Centre, which is supported by the UK based Sumatran Orangutan Society. In his present role, Ricko is still highly active in orangutan conservation issues throughout the region, such as confiscations of illegal pets, rescue and translocation of isolated wild orangutans and in lobby and advocacy work to protect the species.
Ricko is a dedicated conservationist, and is one of the founders of Cicem Nanggroe, a local bird enthusiast NGO based in Aceh Province, Indonesia. He is also a capable veterinarian and very much able to work in diverse conditions. As such, I am sure that Ricko would be an enthusiastic participant in the course and able to make a valuable contribution himself, and for sure he would benefit tremendously from such an opportunity.
Given the above, I fully support his application for a place on the course and a scholarship to enable him to attend, and hope you will consider his application most carefully."
