Birthday quiz

Question 1 p>
What is Kea’s mother called?
Dagu
Oshine
Dana
Gina
Correct!

Kea’s mum is Dana, who came to Durrell in 2009. If you guessed Dagu, that’s her father’s name. Gina was our much missed matriarch, who sadly died aged around 52 years-old, last year. Oshine is a rescued orangutan at Monkeyworld, who starred in their TV show.

Question 2
What does Keajiaban mean in English?
Star
Miracle
Baby
Acrobat
Correct!

Keajaiban is Indonesian for miracle!

Question 3
But why is she a 'miracle'?
She’s the first orangutan born at Durrell
Her mother was artificially inseminated
Her mother, Dana, was considered infertile
She was born by caesarean section
Correct!

Kea’s mum Dana was considered infertile, after a tragic still-birth in 2009 left her with blocked fallopian tubes. Just when we thought all hope of her having a baby was lost, an amazing human Obstetrician came along and flushed her fallopian tubes. Kea was born against all odds!

Question 4
How many Sumatran orangutans are left in the wild (estimated)?
45,000 to 69,000
5,000 to 6,600
Less than 5,000
7,300
Correct!

Although IUCN Red List and WWF websites state there are 7,300 Sumatran orangutans left in the wild, these figures are from 2004. More recent research by our friend Dr. Serge Wich puts the population at a worrying 5,000 to 6,600 – and declining.

Question 5
What is the biggest threat facing wild orangutans?
Conversion of forests to palm oil plantations
The value of Indonesian hardwoods
Bushmeat hunting and pet trade
Deforestation for cattle ranching
Correct!

Whilst hardwood, ever-growing human populations and conflicts between local farmers and orangutans all contribute, the global demand for palm oil is killing orangutans in their thousands. Many are either shot or left to starve in a single tree, whilst the cleared, burned ground around them still smokes.

Question 6
Former Durrell Keeper and conservation hero Ian Singleton leads which front-line rescue organisation?
Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme
Sumatran Orangutan Society
Ape Action Africa
Last Great Ape Organisation
Correct!

Dr. Ian Singleton heads up the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme. SOCP operate rescue centres, carry out translocations, give veterinary care and generally watch out for orangutans in Sumatra.

We hope you enjoyed testing your knowledge of Kea and Sumatran orangutans... perhaps learning a thing or two about the threats they face. We're working to help secure their future, but without your help this would simply not be possible. Though the competition might now have ended, if you're 'in' too, we'd really appreciate it if you could donate whatever you can spare - no matter how small. Truly, we cannot thank you enough.
